Short answer first
When you choose a kids optometrist in Surrey, prioritize three things. First, the clinic should see children of all ages, including kids who cannot read a letter chart yet. Second, the visit should check eye health and how the eyes work together, not only how clearly they see. Third, the doctor should explain the results to parents in plain language, and be ready to talk about myopia control if the prescription keeps getting stronger.
At Guildford Eye Clinic, a full eye exam for children 18 and under is covered yearly by MSP, with no extra fee on top of that covered exam. OCT retinal imaging is included. We are an independent optometry clinic run by Dr. Lin and Dr. Xue Optometry, inside Specsavers at Guildford Town Centre. Specsavers is the retail dispensary in the same space. We provide the clinical care.
What to look for in a kids optometrist
Parents often start with a search for "kids eye exam near me" or "optometrist for kids." Those searches are useful, but the right clinic is not only the closest one. Use this checklist when you compare options in Surrey and Guildford:
- They see children of all ages. A first exam can happen before your child can name letters. Age-right tests matter more than a chart they cannot answer yet.
- They check eye health, not only vision. A comprehensive kids visit looks at the retina, optic nerve, and eye alignment, and explains what was found before you leave.
- They include imaging when it is relevant. At our clinic, OCT is part of every comprehensive exam for kids, adults, and seniors.
- They can discuss myopia control. If glasses keep getting stronger, ask whether the clinic measures axial length and offers evidence-based options, not only a stronger pair of glasses.
- They explain costs before anything is added. You should hear about any extra, such as a contact lens prescription or a required form, at the front desk before it begins.
- Parents can ask questions in a language they use at home. English, Mandarin, Punjabi, and Korean are available here when schedule allows.
Our children's eye exam in Surrey page walks through the visit itself. This article focuses on how to choose the right clinic for your family.
When should a child have their first eye exam?
You do not need to wait until your child can read a classroom chart. We see toddlers, preschoolers, and school-age kids. A child's first eye exam at Guildford Eye Clinic uses tests that match their age, so the visit stays useful even when they cannot sit still for long or name every letter.
Book sooner if you notice squinting, sitting very close to screens or books, tilting the head, covering one eye, frequent headaches after near work, or trouble tracking. A family history of strong nearsightedness or early glasses is another reason not to wait. School screenings can catch some problems, but they are not a substitute for a full optometry exam.
What a children's eye exam should include
A good kids optometrist visit answers more than "do they need glasses?" It should cover:
- How clearly each eye sees, with age-appropriate methods
- How the eyes team and track together
- Eye health, including a look at the retina and optic nerve
- A clear explanation for parents before you leave
At Guildford Eye Clinic, OCT retinal imaging is included in every comprehensive exam. Your child's first useful scan becomes a baseline that later exams can compare against. That helps us notice small changes over time, not only a jump in the glasses number. For a deeper walkthrough of what a full exam checks, see what a comprehensive eye exam actually checks and why OCT is included.
MSP coverage for kids eye exams in BC
For children 18 and under with BC MSP coverage, a full eye exam is covered yearly by MSP. At our Surrey clinic we do not add a fee on top of that covered exam, so for most families the yearly kids visit has no out-of-pocket cost for the exam itself.
Two things are separate from the covered exam, and we tell you before either is added. A contact lens prescription, or a form a school or insurer requires, is a separate add-on. A myopia control program is also separate from the covered exam, because MSP does not cover myopia treatment. We explain every cost at the front desk before anything begins, and we direct bill many major insurance plans when a plan helps with an add-on. Bring your insurance details to the visit. Myopia: when stronger glasses every year is a signal
Nearsightedness is not only the number on a glasses prescription. If that number keeps rising, the eye may still be growing longer. Axial length is the size of the eye, and measuring it helps us see whether myopia is still progressing. That measurement is part of pediatric myopia management at Guildford Eye Clinic.
When a child needs a myopia control plan, we start with assessment and tracking, then match treatment to the child. Options we use include low-dose atropine, soft multifocal contacts, and myopia control spectacles such as MiyoSmart and Myoeye. We do not offer Ortho-K. Myopia control spectacles are one tool in a program, not a product on their own. For the full program overview, go to our myopia control in Surrey service page rather than treating this article as a second explainer.
Dr. Laura Lin leads pediatric myopia management here. Parents who want a short primer on why axial length matters can also read axial length and myopia risk.
Languages, location, and who provides the care
Many Surrey families want a parent or grandparent in the room who can ask questions in Mandarin, Punjabi, Korean, or English. Mention your language preference when you book so we can match the schedule when possible. Details are in our guide to eye exams in Mandarin, Korean, and Punjabi.
We are on the upper level of Guildford Town Centre in Surrey, inside Specsavers: Unit 2309, 10355 152 Street, Surrey, BC V3R 7C1. Mall parking is available. Set your GPS to Specsavers Guildford. After parking, take the mall entrance closest to Scotiabank; Specsavers is the second store on your left.
If you are sorting out which type of eye doctor to see for a child versus a surgery referral, our article on optometrist vs ophthalmologist in Surrey explains the difference. For most kids eye exams, an optometrist is the right starting point.
When a child's eye problem should not wait
A red eye, eye pain, something in the eye, an injury, an infection, new flashes or floaters, or a sudden change in vision should not wait for the next routine opening. Call Guildford Eye Clinic first at (604) 229-9627 so we can triage and fit your child in when a doctor is available. More detail is on our emergency eye care in Surrey page. For help deciding between the ER and a same-day eye visit, see when to go for emergency eye care.
How to book a kids eye exam in Surrey
For a routine kids exam, book online any time. Bring your child's BC Services Card for MSP, and bring insurance details if you expect an add-on to be billed. Tell us about school concerns, screen habits, family history of myopia, and any language preference when you book or at check-in.
If you are still comparing clinics, start with the checklist above, then read the kids eye exam service page and book when you are ready. A yearly rhythm works well for most children, and your optometrist will say if a different interval makes sense for your child.
Choosing a kids optometrist FAQ
How do I choose a kids optometrist in Surrey?
Look for a clinic that sees children of all ages, checks eye health and not only the letter chart, explains results to parents in plain language, and can discuss myopia control when a child's prescription keeps getting stronger. At Guildford Eye Clinic in Guildford Town Centre, a yearly kids exam is covered by MSP for children 18 and under, OCT is included, and Dr. Laura Lin leads pediatric myopia management.
What age should a child have their first eye exam?
Children do not need to read a letter chart for a useful first exam. We see kids of all ages at Guildford Eye Clinic, including toddlers and preschoolers, using age-right tests. If you have concerns about tracking, squinting, sitting too close to screens, or a family history of strong nearsightedness, book sooner rather than waiting for a school screening.
Does MSP cover kids eye exams in BC?
Yes. For children 18 and under with BC MSP coverage, a full eye exam is covered yearly by MSP. Guildford Eye Clinic does not add a fee on top of that covered exam. A contact lens prescription, a required form, or a myopia control program is separate, and we explain any extra before it is added.
What should a children's eye exam include?
A children's eye exam should check how clearly your child sees, how the eyes work together, and the health of the eyes, not only whether they can pass a chart. At Guildford Eye Clinic that includes OCT retinal imaging in every comprehensive exam. If myopia is a concern, we can also measure axial length as part of pediatric myopia management.
When does a child need myopia control?
If your child's glasses keep getting stronger each year, the eye may still be growing longer. That is when a myopia control conversation matters. Options we use include low-dose atropine, soft multifocal contacts, and myopia control spectacles such as MiyoSmart and Myoeye. We do not offer Ortho-K. Treatment starts with measurement and a clear plan, not a product first.
Can parents do the kids eye exam in Mandarin or Punjabi?
Yes when schedule allows. Guildford Eye Clinic offers exams in English, Mandarin, Punjabi, and Korean, so parents and grandparents can ask about results in the language they think in. Mention your language preference when you book.
When should I call for a child's urgent eye problem?
Call Guildford Eye Clinic first at (604) 229-9627 for a red eye, eye pain, something in the eye, an injury, an infection, new flashes or floaters, or a sudden change in vision. Do not wait for the next routine opening. We keep room for urgent concerns when a doctor is available.
Is Guildford Eye Clinic the same as Specsavers?
No. Guildford Eye Clinic is an independent optometry clinic run by Dr. Lin and Dr. Xue Optometry, inside Specsavers at Guildford Town Centre in Surrey. Specsavers is the retail dispensary in the same space. We provide the clinical exam and kids eye care.
