Short answer first
For a routine eye exam, glasses or contacts, kids and seniors checks, dry eye, many red-eye problems, and ongoing monitoring of common eye conditions, start with an optometrist. For eye surgery and advanced specialty management that needs a surgical eye physician, you see an ophthalmologist, usually after a referral.
Guildford Eye Clinic is an independent optometry clinic run by Dr. Lin and Dr. Xue Optometry. We practise inside Specsavers at Guildford Town Centre in Surrey, BC. Specsavers is the retail dispensary in the same space. We provide the clinical exam, imaging, prescriptions, explanations, and referrals when specialty care is needed.
Looking for an optometrist in Surrey with mall parking and a thorough visit? That is our day-to-day work. Exams are not rushed. OCT retinal imaging is included on the comprehensive exam, and we explain what we find before you leave.
What an optometrist does
An optometrist is a primary eye-care doctor. In BC, that usually means they are your first stop for:
- Comprehensive eye exams for adults, kids, and seniors
- Glasses prescriptions and contact lens exams
- Screening and monitoring for glaucoma, macular changes, diabetic eye disease, and other common conditions
- Medical eye concerns such as red eye, pink eye, dry eye, and foreign body issues when they can be managed in clinic
- Myopia control programs for nearsighted children
- Clear written findings, and a referral when surgery or advanced specialty care is the right next step
A good eye exam in Surrey is not only a glasses check. At our clinic, a comprehensive visit includes vision testing, eye health assessment, and OCT retinal imaging at no extra charge on that exam. For a plain-language walkthrough of what gets checked, see what a comprehensive eye exam actually checks and our guide to OCT included in every exam.
Parents booking a first or yearly kids visit can start on our children's eye exam page. Seniors can start on the senior eye exam page. Nearsighted kids who need a managed program, not only stronger glasses each year, belong on myopia control in Surrey.
What an ophthalmologist does
An ophthalmologist is a medical doctor with specialty training in eye disease and surgery. Typical reasons people see one include cataract surgery, certain retinal procedures, complex glaucoma surgery, and other cases where an operating-room or advanced specialty plan is required.
Many Surrey patients meet an ophthalmologist after an optometrist or family doctor finds a reason for that visit. The referral is useful because it carries the exam findings, imaging notes, and the clinical question that needs answering. Starting with a complete optometry exam often saves time later, because the specialist already has a clear picture of what has already been checked.
If cataract care is part of the story, we explain what we see on exam and how co-management with a surgeon and your family doctor can work before and after surgery. That conversation belongs in the chair, after the exam, not as a guess from a search result.
When to book an optometrist in Surrey
Book an optometrist visit when you need any of the following:
- A yearly or overdue comprehensive eye exam
- Updated glasses, or a contact lens exam and fitting
- A kids exam before school, sports, or because of screen complaints
- A senior exam focused on cataracts, glaucoma risk, and macular health
- Dry eye comfort problems that keep returning
- Diabetic eye monitoring as part of regular care
- Questions about whether myopia in a child is still progressing
An optometrist visit in Surrey should end with you understanding your eyes, not only holding a prescription. That is why we protect time to explain the exam, including the OCT scan, in language that matches how you think. Care is available in English, Mandarin, Punjabi, and Korean when schedule allows. Our language guide is here: eye exams in Mandarin, Korean, and Punjabi in Surrey.
When urgent symptoms need a same-day call
A red eye, a sudden change in vision, pain, flashes, floaters, or something in the eye should not wait for the next routine opening. Optometrists manage many of these concerns in clinic when a doctor is available the same day.
Call Guildford Eye Clinic first at (604) 229-9627 so we can triage and fit you in when possible. Do not assume every urgent problem is a hospital trip, and do not assume every red eye can wait a week. Phone first. More detail is on our emergency eye care in Surrey page, including foreign body and infection pathways.
If the problem needs emergency department care or an immediate surgical specialist, we will say that clearly on the call or after we see you. The goal is the right door, not the longest wait.
Kids, seniors, and MSP coverage in BC
In BC, a full eye exam is covered yearly by MSP for children 18 and under and seniors 65 and over. At our clinic there is no extra fee on top of that covered exam. Adults 19 to 64 generally pay for a routine comprehensive exam. With MSP, the adult exam is $99 with OCT included.
Private insurance may reimburse part or all of an adult exam depending on the plan. We direct bill many major plans where possible, so you usually pay only the part your plan does not cover. Bring your insurance details to the visit. You pay at the front desk, and anything that costs extra is explained before it is added.

How referrals work from our clinic
When an exam shows something that needs an ophthalmologist, we do not leave you with a vague next step. We explain what we found, why a specialist visit helps, and what to expect from the referral process. That might be cataract planning, a retinal concern, advanced glaucoma care, or another specialty path.
Starting with a thorough optometry exam helps the ophthalmologist because the referral includes recent findings and imaging context. It also helps you, because you already understand the reason for the visit instead of arriving cold.
If your search was simply for an eye doctor in Surrey and you are not sure which title you need, book the comprehensive exam first. Most people leave with a clear plan for glasses, contacts, monitoring, treatment in clinic, or a specialist referral when that is the right tool.

Do I need a referral to see an ophthalmologist in Surrey?
Many ophthalmology visits in BC are arranged after an optometrist or family doctor finds a reason for specialty care, such as cataract surgery planning or complex eye disease. Start with a comprehensive eye exam so the referral includes the right clinical details.
Is an eye doctor the same as an optometrist?
People often say eye doctor for either an optometrist or an ophthalmologist. In everyday Surrey searches for eye doctor or optometrist near me, they usually mean a clinic for exams, glasses, contacts, kids, and seniors. Ophthalmologists are the surgical and advanced disease specialists.
