More than reading the chart

When people search for an eye exam in Surrey, they often picture letters on a wall and a new glasses number. That matters, but it is not the whole visit. A comprehensive exam has two jobs that sit side by side: update how well you see, and check whether the eyes themselves are healthy.

Those jobs answer different questions. Clarity and a prescription tell you how the optical system is focusing today. Eye health tells you whether the front of the eye, the pressure inside, the optic nerve, and the retina look stable. Many early problems do not blur the chart right away, which is why we treat vision and health as one visit, not two separate appointments you have to remember later.

Vision check: clarity, binocular vision, prescription

The vision half of the exam starts with how clearly each eye sees at distance and near, with and without your current lenses if you wear them. We also look at how the two eyes team together. Binocular vision is about alignment, focusing effort, and whether one eye is doing more work than the other. That matters for comfort during screen time, reading, and driving, not only for the final glasses number.

If a prescription update is needed, we refine it carefully and talk through what changed. Some people leave with the same prescription and a clean bill of optical health. Others need a small tweak for night driving or near work. Either way, the goal is a clear, usable result, not a stronger lens for its own sake.

For families, the same vision framework applies to children, with age-appropriate testing. If nearsightedness is climbing year after year, that conversation can lead into our children's eye exam pathway and, when appropriate, myopia management rather than only stronger glasses.

Eye health: front of the eye, pressure, retina

The health half of the exam looks at structure. We assess the lids, cornea, and front chamber, check eye pressure as part of glaucoma risk screening, and review the optic nerve and retina. The point is not to invent a diagnosis in a blog post. It is to explain why these steps exist: many conditions are quieter in early stages than people expect, and a yearly or regular baseline makes change easier to spot later.

Why OCT is part of every exam here

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a quick scan that maps layers of the retina and optic nerve in cross-section. Nothing touches the eye. At Guildford Eye Clinic, OCT retinal imaging is included in every comprehensive exam, not offered as an optional add-on fee after the fact.

Why include it routinely? Looking at the back of the eye gives one view. OCT adds thickness and layer detail that can support earlier discussion when something looks borderline, and it creates a digital baseline we can compare at the next visit. Parents, adults, and seniors all benefit from that continuity. OCT does not replace the rest of the exam. It sits beside refraction, slit-lamp assessment, pressure checks, and clinical judgment. Technology helps. It does not replace a careful conversation about what the images mean for you.

We also separate clinical findings from retail decisions. The exam is clinical care. Choosing frames or lenses afterward is a separate step at the dispensary if you want new glasses. You are not required to buy anything to receive a complete exam and a clear explanation of results.

Who should book: adults, kids, and seniors

Adults 19 to 64 generally pay for a routine comprehensive exam. On our site the adult exam is listed at $99, with OCT included, matching the CTA used across the clinic pages. Private insurance may reimburse part or all of that fee depending on your plan; we direct bill most plans where possible.

Children 18 and under can have a full eye exam covered yearly by MSP in BC. That coverage is for the comprehensive clinical exam. Separate programs such as ongoing myopia control treatment are discussed as their own plan when relevant, with costs explained before anything starts.

Seniors 65 and over can also have a full yearly comprehensive exam covered by MSP. That is a good rhythm for pressure checks, retinal review, and discussing age-related changes before they interfere with driving or daily reading.
