Why measure axial length for myopia? (Reddit question)

Straight answer for people researching on Reddit and Google. Guildford Eye Clinic, Surrey BC.

On Reddit, parents ask: why measure axial length if we already have a prescription? Because most childhood myopia is the eye growing longer, not only a stronger glasses number. The prescription is a symptom. Axial length is the structural change tied to long-term risk.

At Guildford Eye Clinic in Surrey we use an ocular biometer for a quick, no-touch scan. That is pillar one of our kids myopia program, led by Dr. Laura Lin. Two kids can share the same Rx and different eye lengths, so the plan should follow the eye, not the chart alone.
